Cellphone addicts suffer from text neck

Cellphone addicts suffer from text neckA new ailment named text neck has cropped up among mobile users caused by prolonged use of cell phones. The new condition has emerged because mobile users need to flex their neck for long periods of time to send text messages. If the condition is not treated, there is a possibility that the muscles of the neck would fit into the flexed position, and straightening the neck would become painful.

The popularity of smart phones and tablet computers has contributed to the development of this condition. The joints and tissues of the neck are not able to withstand the prolonged flexed position. Peering at a screen for long periods of time puts the muscles of the neck under a lot of strain. As one needs to keep the neck and head stretched forward for long periods of time, it can lead to a reversal of the natural curvature of the neck, with risk of serious health problems.

Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association said the situation was one of concern as number of people with such neck problems is on the rise. The problem can be easily prevented though, all you need is to be watchful of any such development and perform regular exercise to keep it from aggravating. Children should be especially careful as their head size is more in proportion to their body, when compared to adults.
